You could crawl down the outside of the your tower and follow the wall to the gatehouse towers or there is a trapdoor down to the inside of your towers and a passage to the wall. You do not need to drop into the garden.
The woman is sitting watching it all calmly. You believe she is the herbalists from Brindol who some consider a witch.

"That is the herbalist from Brindol" Hraken whispers to his fellow sneaks. "Do you think this old witch is involved? If we timed our attacks properly we could surely do quite a bit of damage to her or those hounds." Hraken eyes the old woman, desperatelytrying to gauge her level of involvement. (Perception 16)
OOC: We should all try a simultaneous ranged sneak attack on the old woman. Unless you think we are outmatched.
I could cast Hunter's mark on her as well to help with my damage; and as long has Hraken doesn't hit her first, he gets 1d8 extra damage from colossal slayer. If we time it right, we should be able to get quite a bit of damage on her. Would Hunter's mark cause us to lose our surprise attack?
There is the possibility that she is one of the prisoners and not evil... Can we try to identify her?
Edit: Ninja post by Admin. Do you guys think she is a threat? I'm a little hesitant to jump to conclusions. Her calmness could indicate involvement or domination; I would lean towards involvement thought. We could try to take out the Drake's first instead and see how she responds. Thoughts?
Edit: added thoughts in-character for better role-play

Oloric whispers to the group, "I'm not sure what's going on with that woman but we need to destroy those drakes fast and then probably try to help our way to the goblins on the other towers. We need to help the others get through alive. If she's a threat she'll show herself as such and we'll deal with her then. If not, perhaps that magic circle is keeping her there and we can deal with that problem at another time. I think we should use this tower as our advantage on the drakes then move towards the goblins somehow (perhaps it'll keep them off of the others also!)."
Oloric can cast a spell to fire at the drake and let Hraken follow up to get his maximum effect (dang that's a cool power. Rangers are pretty sweet).
Assuming this is the case:
Attack: 18 total and 5 damage with a Firebolt.

Looking at the old woman she looks like she has had a bad time. She is weathered and beaten looking. She tosses a pebble that smacks off a force field coming from the circle she looks trapped in.

You have surprise everyone gets an attack. I think hunters mark is you focusing on the target. I don't think you call out challenge or anything.

"She appears to be trapped in some kind of force-field." Hraken takes out his crossbow and aims it on the nearest drake. "Once the others are in place, we should strike fast." He stars intently, whispering to himself as he brings forth the beast within himself, controlling it. His eyes narrow and burn with fiery intensity. This drake will be his prey. You have surprise everyone gets an attack. I think hunters mark is you focusing on the target. I don't think you call out challenge or anything. That's what I figured. I assumed it was a sort of silent spell-casting. I just wanted confirmation before we ruined the attack. Mechanics: cast hunter's mark on the drake. Edit: Also, I made this topic for OOC discussion to keep this one from getting too cluttered: dailydoserpg.boards.net/thread/123/ooc-discussion-siege-on-strongholdEdit: added verbal competent to more accuratly represent the spell role-play wise.

[OOC: Hunter's mark isn't silent. It has a verbal component just like any other spell. To cast it you give away location but can gain surprise attack if hidden. Just like Oloric casting his spell would be the same. Hunter's mark still requires the same chanting as any other spell but it's a bonus action so you can use it and then shoot in the same surprise round to get the +damage. So i'd say you should throw an attack right after Oloric to get the +1d8 and the 1d6 from hunter's mark right?
Izzy would also be able to attack with surprise for sneak attack I would think right? We can have him fire first instead of Oloric if that would obviously help ensure he does get sneak, etc.]

At least that's how I interpreted it. I can whisper it just like I'm talking to you guys, and if that didn't give away our position, then casting hunter's mark wouldn't either. I should have mentioned that I was mouthing something though, sorry. My main question to Stephen was more about whether he he would require that it would have some sort of magical/visible element that would alert the enemy, or whether the target would otherwise "feel" the effects of the spell in some way.

I'm always thought it was something that effected you making you have more focus on the target. I never interpeted it as somrthing thst effects them. It targets him but the effect is on you.

"Hold up a few, folks. Do we really want to tackle the giant lizard beasts on our own, or should we head down the wall and clear out the gobs first, and collect our pals and THEN try and take out the critters? Don't want them to feel left out or anything..." Izzy's looking down into the courtyard. Is the gnome still busy with the gate?

From your current position you can't see the Gnome.
Malik and the rest see the Gnome is still working on the wheel. He can't seem to get it going.

It can't be whispered for instance. If it could then all spells can right? My next level i'm taking Subtle spell so I can do spells without verbal. If we could whisper it would make the power somewhat useless anyways except in real silence spell. So was trying to say someone "can" hear you casting the same as Oloric is casting the spell. That's all. So if casting a spell you're making noise someone could hear. It's not something you can do stealthily unless all spells can be. If that is the thought process i'd want to know before taking subtle spell since it would not be useful.

Malik will charge the gate at some point before his shield of faith spell ends. Even if he rushes it a bit...

So Izzy first then the spell casters. The question is who are you going to attack?

It can't be whispered for instance. If it could then all spells can right? I don't see why spells couldn't be whispered, just like a conversation between two stealthy players can be whispered. Verbal says nothing about volume, it only requires that you speak them out loud; a whisper is still vocal. So yes, all spells can be whispered. Page 204 of the PHB says ... If you are planning on taking Subtle Spell to be stealthy, I would rethink that since any spell can be stealthy as long as doesn't have a perceptible effect. Someone can hear a whisper if they are close enough, but anyone can whisper any spell and be stealthy with it (if the spell allows). Subtle spell would be more useful in some close-quarter instances or if we were underwater, or if you were gagged or had your mouth full. It really depends on how Stephen interprets it, but in my opinion Subtle Spells doesn't seem designed with stealth in mind. It doesn't seem like it's that great unless you expect to encounter a lot of situations that prevent normal spell-casting.
