As you are moving out the east bridge of the north gate Wordwise stops you. "I had my friend Morrik mark the trail on a map. He said that the Hobgoblins are just north of the Witchcrossing. Captain Derrius and the Lord Warden are planning to attack them as soon as Alys return with forces from Dennovar." You start well before noon and the flat lands or farms and orchard allow you to make good time. BY noon you find the old road to Rivenroar. It has not seen much traffic in a century and the woods are reclaiming it but it is flat and without large trees. By the early afternoon the path begins to climb into hills and then mountains. The path is 25 feet wide with a sheer cliff on the left that drop to the raging river below. The right is mountain rising up above you. You can tell the path was made by man and can not imagine the years of backbreaking work that went into carving it out of the mountain wall. OOC: Everyone please roll 2 endurance (constitution with any athletics bonus added), 2 nature, 2 perception, and 2 animal handling rolls and list the results.

[So, by "endurance", I assume you mean a Con check? That's a 6 and a 13, Nature is an 8 and a 7, Perception is a 14 and a 17, and Animal Handling is a 10 and an 11.]

If you have athletic skill you can add it to the Con check when checking for endurance. Trained athletes tend to not become exhausted.
The beginning of the ride was rough for Izzy probably because of the rushing to catch up with the group. He then was able to catch his breath. He kept his animal pointed in the right direction and has yet to run it off the cliff. He did wander a little from the group.

OOC: Everyone please roll 2 endurance (constitution with any athletics bonus added), 2 nature, 2 perception, and 2 animal handling rolls and list the results.
Malik: Endurance 21, 26 (rolled a 20 BAH), Nature 2, 7 (uh oh), Perception 12, 19 Animal Handling 4, 15 (please let me know if you have changes to this skill. 5E you don't roll regular skill checks to ride unless it's something special like being knocked off the horse, etc. If you plan differently I might have wanted that skill as the Paladin)
Oloric: Endurance 10, 18 Nature 13, 7,
Perception 5, 22
Animal Handling 4, 3 (hope me just riding on a wagon makes these not as needed lol)

Just holding some of the rolls in my pocket or they are used if other rolls build to a failure.

Blackarrow raises an eyebrow at Izzy's request. "I think I can do better than a scrap of paper." He pulls a scorched black-headed arrow from his pack and offers it. "I used this one in the Hall. It survived the fire, but I don't think it's sturdy enough to trust in a fight. Of course, having this does bring the risk of immediate imprisonment and interrogation if the guards see it, so I'd understand if you refuse."
Endurance: 19 and 11. Nature: 12 and 9. Perception: 14 and 8. Animal Handling: 21 and 18. (Wow, I may be exhausted, lost, and blind, but my horse will love me!)

"Really? That... could actually come in handy, given the right circumstances. They recognize your gear right off, do they?" Izzy takes the arrow, looks at it closely and then carefully wraps it up and stashes it in his backpack. "So, what's it like, being a shadowy terror that stalks the night?"

Hraken leads the group down the trail in and into the mountains. He is home now. He spent the better part of his life learning to track and hunt in mountains like this. He was trained to be the best, and so that is what he soon became (to the regret of his trainers). Endurance: 19, 13 Nature: 10, 21 Perception: 22, 7 Animal Handling: 9, 4 (Fortunately, like Faragrim, I'm not using them... lol)
If we are in the mountains (Hraken's favored terrain) I believe I get double proficiency bonus with Perception, so those become 24 and 9. There are a few other bonuses as well including the fact that we can't get lost except by magical means. (just in case you someone fails their checks miserably.

The mountain trail is miles of uphill travel. Hraken lopes along without seemly endless endurance on the plains of the Elsir Vale but 4 hours into the trail even he begins to tire. Blackarrow and his horse suffer the same. Fargrims time off the wagon are getting shorter, but Oloric takes the extra turns walking. Malik and his warhorse plow through. The problem is Malik an his warhorse plow through everything. Hraken spends half his time keeping Izzy from running his horse into the poison oak, keeping Malik from stumbling into a bears den. He takes the group around the Hobgoblin camp and even gets them past Hobgoblin scouts unseen. Guiding Oloric and the wagon away from crumbling edge of the cliff he turns too late to see Malik investing a crevasse in the side of the cliff. Hraken knows you never investigate a crevasse in the side of the cliff. Malik notices a metallic shine from the crevasse. He pushes the foliage back with his axe and sees the husk of a body in torn and weathered scale mail. A blade lies on the ground broken. Malik hears a chattering and a scrapping above him. Looking up he sees a group of dog sized bugs crawling down the cliff wall toward him. Connan rears back and away from the crevasse as Malik tries to control the warhorse. Black Arrow and Harik just notice the horse rearing(surprised first round). Izzy, Fargrim, Paelius and Oloric see the insects above. Malik is on a rearing warhorse (warhorse is easy to handle but a 3 is pretty bad). Roll for initiative Black Arrow and Hraken or looking ahead for the first round and are surprised. Malik needs a Riding (DC8) to not come off his horse and an Animal Handling (DC5) to steady Connan. Riding is Dex with Animal Handling, the other is Cha with Animal Handling.

[Init total: 15. Are those 5 ft squares on the map? If so, then the crevasse is 75 feet away from Izzy?]
"Eep! Grow 'em big around here, don't they?" Izzy pulls out his hand crossbow, and wheels his horse around, waiting for the wagon to get out of the way.

OOC: Hah. I noticed a "Halik" in there. That's a Malik/Hraken combo? LOL. Can you clarify that I believe Hraken is the other one surprised correct? Malik is not surprised but will start first round dealing with his poor equestrian skills correct?
Malik is unable to keep Connan from rearing him off of the horse's back, the horse clearly spooked even for a Warhorse. As he falls to his rump, he thinks "What did that Paladin feed this horse? Derrius must have been a better rider than I am. This horse is wild!"
OOC: Malik rolls a total of 5 for Riding and a total of 5 for Animal Handling to steady Connan (apparently I don't like the middle rolls. 1's and 2's or 20's for me!).
Round 1 (If possible unless something happens based on my rolls): Malik grabs his axe and stands up attempting to get Connan settled and to re-seat himself atop the warhose. "We've got trouble and it's not just my poor back side! Arm yourselves!" As a bonus action, Malik casts Hunter's mark choosing the nearest bug creature as his target. He ready's his axe's to attack if one gets near.
Edit: Initiative roll = 16 if you need it from everyone? When I read it it seemed like only for the two of them but just in case.

OOC: Initiative for Oloric = 9.
Round 1: Oloric sees the bugs but is slightly distracted by the Paladin's inability to control his mount. Remembering it was said Paladin who had to save him only a day ago it brings a grin to his face. "Looks like we'll be having authentic road kill for dinner!". The sorcerer, seeing so many small creatures around the I'll prepared Paladin casts magical sleep upon them hoping to slim down their numbers while Malik re situates himself [Total HP put to sleep = 28]
Oloric uses a bonus action to flexible cast sorcerer points to regain his spell slot.
*Edited.
