A once grand edifice rises above steep walls, which are about 50 feet tall. Three walls encircle the compound and run up the higher slopes of the Hammer mountain which towers above it all. Much of it is covered in snow, but the central great hall still stands rising above the walls.
Near the gate, you see the three bonfires still burn before the wall. Haunches of half cooked meat were tossed to the sides of the bonfires. Getting closer you see the meat looks like arms and legs.

Tleyar elected to help the others assault the monastery remains, seeing as the elf had more extensive knowledge of its occupied interior than Rhal - after all, even a slave has more freedom of movement than a prisoner tied to a torture rack.

Tleyar knows that within the gatehouse is a path to the great hall. Smaller (6' statues including the base) line the path. They are dwarves of minor historical note from the Paladins and Monks of the Monestary. (paladins to the right, monks to the left) Behind them stand 3 statues on a side that show the founders of the Monestary. They stood 18' high before they where torn down by the orc horde. Most of the smaller statues have been broken or defaced. Beyond that Tlyer knows that you will find the burnt, bloated, and part consumed bodies of dwarven paladins and monks. Most still wear scraps of their bed clothes from the night the Orc Horde charged from the gate to attack.
Khalad and his griffon swoop down to land next to the elf. "So the rest turned tail when most needed. I expected as much from some, but others seemed more honorable."

Fargrim lands next to the elf and old Paladin.
Fargrim looks back up the cliff. "No-one knows what that -" his face twitches slightly, "-stalwart defender of dwarven culture is thinkin'. But I'll go get 'im." Flying his griffon back up to Khalad, he calls out "Master Khalad! Y'r advice is requested below, on tactical matters!"
Khalad looks to the dwarf."So you will not be coming with to save your kin? Then just jump off my girl before she flips you off her back."

Ooc: I assume the rest of the group will take some time using normal horses to arrive. Tell us when we arrive unless the others actually think and wait a minute for the rest of us.

Half of your group has been in or lived in the Monastery so you know (or have had explained) the details of the area. The gate and path within. The area to the east is covered with snow just beyond the larger destroyed statues. The first level is living and meeting areas. It is 20' high with two levels of smaller rooms along each side. The second level is the chapel. It is wider than the first level and the cathedral ceiling's peak is 40' above the floor. Each wall had 2 long stained glass windows and all 16 of them are smashed. The peak is actually a stained glass dome with a 40' diameter. It is now half shattered.

"Does NO-ONE listen to the words that come out of my mouth? What part of 'let's wait until beardo gets back with the eyefull before we start making plans' was unclear, guys?" Izzy shakes his head, swings up onto Big Jerk's back, and rides through the narrow passage to the monastery. "You dumbasses realize we're all working for free now, right?" he says, as he enters the gateway.
Fargrim stares coldly at Khalad for several moments, and then steps down from the griffon's back. "D'ye know, I think we may be able to live WITHOUT y'r tactical advice, Master Khalad. P'rhaps ye could find a convenient hole t' fall into while the professionals do their bloody job." He rolls his neck, turns and begins watching the doorways and windows for movement. Khalad just humphs him and turns to look at the open gatehouse and the courtyard beyond.
You see a group of 4 orc gunts begin to shuffle out from the broken double doors of the main house. One is waving a spear with a bloody white rag on the end. "Mercy!" He yells in broken common. "Mercy! De left us heres to die de did." The orc kneel in the center of the courtyard with empty hands outstretched.
Fargrim notes the avalanche to the left side of the courtyard has a patch of three snow clumps that look the same as the another three snow clumps. He can not see inside at the entire courtyard but wonders if there are more. He does not see movement in the first floor windows, but does believe he sees shapes in the larger broken windows above.

As Delrin, Malik, and the rest ride forward they see Khalad, Fargrim, and Tleyar standing outside the gatehouse. Within they see 4 orc kneeling in the courtyard one has a spear with a white bloody "flag" on the end.

Out of the orcs' earshot, Delrin wryly comments "The orcs really expect us to believe they're surrendering? They're orcs. I'd sooner expect one of them to fly off on a Pegasus." As he rides up, Delrin attempts to scan the area for the ambushers that undoubtedly have to be somewhere nearby.

Delrin notes the patches of exact patterns of 2 medium and 1 large sized snow mounds. One patch is even opposite of the side where the avalanche landed.

Malik looks around and speaks softly, "Let us show them the mercy of a quick death."

Fargrim frowns and mutters, "Another one of those bloody gnomes, I'd wager. They do love their illusions, don't they." As Izzy and the rest come forward, he lays out the setup, speaking softly. (illusionary snowbanks on both sides, probably with orogs waiting under them; fake surrender by mooks to draw us all in.)
Izzy thinks a moment and says, "Well, the mooks look unarmed, so they're low priority. Maybe move up to the gate and then concentrate fire on the fake snowbank on our left, see if we can clean them out so we don't get surrounded if we move into the courtyard? If we stay in the gateway, we can keep from getting swamped. Melee folks in the front row, missile fire behind them, mobile folks ready to dart in and out. How's that sound?"

The horses need room to move and we don't want to fight two fronts. I think we should charge the mounds first. If we get caught at the gate we lose an escape route if its more than we see and we get in trouble.
If needed: Malik init: 18 Oloric init: 8

[OOC tactical: There's mounds on both sides, but there's more on the right, which probably means thats where most of them are. That's why I thought we should try and clear out the ones on the left, in case we need to move into the courtyard. That way we're not surrounded. But my thought was that we should stick by the gate and make them come to us, that way if they charge us, we can head back down the canyon and they've got to get through the bottleneck at the gate. I don't think there's really enough room in the courtyard for cavalry-style antics, and Mal and Del are probably the only ones that can do much good that way. And Mal's probably the best suited for face-to-face melee in the crew right now.]
