Some of these issues have been discussed in my articles over the years. The power and status of the Malay language now rests on the fundamental attributes that enable it to develop over time. These qualities are not gifts from God's power but are the result of language engineering through the socio-economic, political and other formations of language users. as a unifying language for the multi-racial Malaysian people after gaining independence in 1998. In fact, Malay was once the language of trade and the common language between Malays and non-Malays. Past glories can continue to exist as long as all citizens are determined to develop them in the face of globalization and liberalization.
