Flight Operations- Top Gun
Location: Deck 2 Pilot Simulators
The Pilots are running flight simulators to be ranked and arseigned to the Alpha or Omega Wings. Noel will be Commander of Alpha wings while Ranna will command the Omega wing. Reserve and Defender pilots will also be arseigned by the outcome of the simulations runs.
Mechanics: This will be run in an quick abstract way. After rolling Int each pilot has one maneuver and action to perform. Maneuvers can give the pilot advantage (boost die) on the opponent that may be used on an attack roll or as a setback to the opponents attack. Other actions may be used as appropriate to the story.

Ten pilots crowed the Alpha and Omega briefing rooms waiting for the first flight sims to begin.
In Alpha bay Noel Ciro stood calm and smiling. He greeted each pilot as they entered and now raised a hand for attention. "You have passed the basic pilot certification simulation or have a flight record with the New Republic. Today I will looking for you skills as an individual pilot and which combinations have a synergy to make them an effective team. We have 20 pilots and only 14 fighters. This means some pilots will be on reserve status. Reservist will have the same requirement and commitment to excellence as Wing Commanders. If a dogfight the factor that determines defeat or victory is usually the weakest link in the team. We will strive to have no weak links." Picking up the sim helmet Ciro slides into a flight simulator. "I will demonstrate the simulator with a run against the Omega Wing Commander."
The words burst out Carne's mouth before he brain could stop them,"Your taking on Wing-Ripper! Good luck with that." The Mon Cal then added a quick,"Sir."
Noel just smiled his half smirk and started the simulator. In the middle of the briefing room a holoprojector sprang to life showing a tactical view of the flight.
The Omega bay was a different scene. Ranna has the pilots lock up at attention as she prowls the two columns of crewmen. "I have been tasked to turn you into pilots worthy to be in the "Wing Rippers". Some of you look past your prime, some look like you have never had a prime. Many of you have flow Headhunters, tie fighters, or some other piece of Sith fighter. You will be joining the big show with the best fighter ever built. You will each have a chance today to begin to prove you are more than Bantha Fodder." The fiery lieutenant pulled a flight helmet over her amber curls and slide into the flight simulator. "First though let me demonstrate how the X-Wing operates with a flight run against the Alpha flight commander."
Dasha called the crew to at ease and leaned into Will's ear,"20 creds on Ciro."
Will smiled,"Make it 40."
The holographic flickered to life and the Omega group gathered to watch.

Ciro skirted the edge of the combat zone. Ranna did what Ranna does and thrust full throttle toward his X-wing. Ciro thrusts away staying out of range of her cannons. The battle becomes a chase of Ciro shifting and dodging his opponent. Ranna slowly gains on Ciro. As she close her comm comes online. Ciro's voice is gleeful as he states just one word,"Boom!" Ranna responds with a string of curses. She arcs to port as an explosion rocks her ship. "Dead drop Proton Torpedo," Que mumbles as he watches the Holograph. "Haven't seen that since the war."
Ranna's simulator rocks as the HUD blossoms into red alerts. Ignoring them she dives at Ciro. To draw her into the trap he let her get close. A little too close. Her cannons fire spraying the stern of his X-wing with energy.
Ciro's aft deflector shield blows with the battery of fire raining on him. He hoped the torpedoe would be the end of the combat. With Ranna locked onto his ship the chances of shaking her are slim and none.
Mechanics: Ciro has initiative and decides to roll a Deception vs. Discipline to run Ranna into a proton torpedoe. His 4 Cunning (4A) against her Intelligence and Discipline (2P). His roll ends with 1 Success but a Despair. The success causes 9 damage to Ranna's hull leaving her ship with 1 hull point. Ranna does gain 2 boosts to her roll.
Ranna attacks with Gunnery at short range 2A+2P+2B vs. 1D. She totals 2 success(triumph) and 8 advantages. Ranna uses the advantages to activate multiple hits with the linked cannons and a critical hit. Hits are 3, 3, 3, and 3 after shields (2) and armor (3)reductions. The critical damages his shields. Ciro Hull is critical and any strike or maneuver could cause it to break apart.

Round 2 Ciro cut his ion engines and push his repulsor drive in reverse. Through force of will his ship held together as he slipped behind Ranna. Firing his cannons at point blank his visor blackened to compensate for the explosion of what was her X Wing.
Ranna tossed her her helmet across the briefing room as she screamed in frustration.
Mechanics: Ciro makes a piloting roll to gain the advantage. Since he is maneuvering with negative hull points he must roll piloting vs 2D to not break apart. He succeeds then succeeds with 2 advantages on his maneuver. Finally he makes an attack with the ship's cannons. 3 success and 2 advantages becomes two cannon strikes bringing Ranna's vessel to -12 hull damage which is instant destruction.

Round 3 Ciro maneuvered his ship gently forward. Punching the comm he began to order the virtual R2 unit to begin repairs. His ship's port dorsal wing and ion engine twisted downwards flashing the stern and the second port engine. Melting the exhaust port Ciro punched the eject button as the engines began to meltdown. He floated in virtual space on the holographic display as his ship exploded.
Mechanics: Ciro makes a piloting roll vs. 2D to keep his ship together. He fails causing his ship to break apart. It is an avergae difficulty vs cool to eject from the ship in time.

Round 3: Will turns to Dasha flashing his best smile. "That's a tie right? Right?" Dasha crossed her arms and just stared down Will until his goofy smile faded,"40 credits or I make sure you are flying one of those defenders instead of an X-Wing." Will relents and digging into multiple pockets scrapes together 40 credits.
Mechanics: Will tries to charm Dasha out of taking his 40 credits. Charm (3A) vs. Will (3A) roll ends with no success and a threat.

Ciro and Ranna look over their units, "Okay, Who is up next?"
Narrator: As PC arrive they may challenge another PC or the Narrator with NPCs to a simulator battle. Outcomes may change who is assigned X-wing positions, Defender positions, or reserve status.

a tall lanky light blue skinned Duros stood up. There was a glint in his red eyes and an uncharacteristic (for a duros) toothy smile on his face and waved his left hand.
"Garran Keeg, here. I graduated from the academy with top 5 highest score for gunnery. I can shoot the antenna off a fefze head while going 80 megalights with my cannons and do some fancy flying at the same time. I don't know who wants to challenge me but I can certainly prove it in the simulator"
(going to use perception to see if i can get a measure of the pilots to see who i would be best matched with) Keeg thinks Ranna might be more predictable in a head to head initial pass, but after seeing the last fight he isn't sure he could handle her in a furrball. Ciro wouldn't allow him a nice initial shot for the head to head pass, but might have a better chance in the furball. Either way, he would eat his helmet if he was sent to the reserves.

Ranna and the other members of Omega Flight turn to the young pilot with smiles,"I see you found the Stim Cafe this morning Ensign.." Ranna looks at his nametag,"Keeg. Good to see someone here is ready to prove he is ready for the show." She presses the comlink on the holotable bringing up the Alpha Flight simulator bay. "I've got a live on here Ciro. He's a top of his class type. Can shoot a whomp rat at 400 meters or some such nonsense. Who do you have to stand up to this terror of the classroom?"
Ciro turned to the unit and a small brown skinned Mon Calamari stepped forward. Ciro nodded to him and the Mon Cal made a small fist pump before catching himself and quietly sitting in the simulator.
As Keeg slides into his simulator he sees the opposition identified as Lieutenant Carne Lopak.
The computer voice begins a countdown to the initiation of the simulation. 5..4..3..2..1..initiate
Mechanics: Carne has an Initiative of 0 success and 1 advantage so you will probably go before him.
You will roll an opposed maneuver roll Carne has 2 difficulty purple and 2 Threat die for his side of the roll. For each success in maneuver the difficulty of your gunnery check goes down. If you fail each failure makes the gunnery check 1 difficulty higher. 2 advantages may be used to buy a boost to you attack or your defense against his attack (your choice). Disadvantages Carne will use just like you use advantages.
After maneuver then make your attack and Carne will make his.
This assumes you are not doing anything out of the ordinary just trying to out fly and pound each other into submission.

Rolled 1 advantage, 1 success on initiative.
(Roll Cool (YG) for initiative, 1 success, 1 advantage)
Keeg collects himself and starts getting into the zone. From what he has learned in most starfighter combats the first head to head pass can decided the outcome of 90% of dogfights. Most experienced pilots avoid the mutually assured destruction of the Head to Head pass by trying to aim for the flanks of their opponent and outmaneuvering them just before the pass. The less experienced pilots time their turn too late and end up sucking vacuum. But there was another option he discovered, being the first to score a hit just at the limits of maximum range, then going for the flanking maneuvers. Too often opponents became overconfident thinking they were going after a rookie pilot who was just going for the head to head engagement. But this "Rookie" was practically a sniper with his starfighter.
(Piloting check 2Y2G vs 2R2P = 2 successes and a triumph, and 2 threats)
Linning up his crosshairs to the enemy blip in his HUD, and looked at the rangefinder rapidly decreasing, and started calculating in his head. with a flip of a thumb he turned off the convergence of the lasers allowing for a larger spread at maximum range. He was going 80 MGLT and knew at the rate he was closing his opponent was near or close to the same, that meant maximum range at this speed would be close to 1.25 clicks, but even the shots from the lasers were did not truly travel at light speed, and instead he would need to fire just after 1.39 clicks to get his shot. His eyes almost went into a double vision as he looked at the rangefinder, and the crosshairs at the same time, and gave the flight stick a slight tap to the left to line up his shot perfectly. with almost computer precision as soon as the rangefinder hit 1.390 he pressed the trigger and yanked hard on the stick to go evasive until the pass. (upgrading the difficulty of next check)
(Gunnery check = 2Y2G vs 1P2B = 4 success and a triumph)
Only a few seconds had passed in the simulator but it was solid hit on one of the engines (using the Triumph to score a critical hit, rolled 95 for engines) and it would make his next shot easier, but Keeg was still in danger until he got closer.

For the simulation we can keep it simple. You will act first so you roll the opposed maneuver to see who gets outmaneuvers the other. For example, I rolled the opposed roll and you received 3 success and a 2 threats. So Carne needs to roll against 3D to hit you. You won so you have the easy 1D shot. Carne will spend the 2 threat to give you a setback on your shot. This just quickly sims that during you twists and turns you had a great chance for a shot and he did not. Then you attack vs. 1D and 2S (1 setback for shields 1 for 1 for the threats) Then just narrate how your guy flew circles around the overconfident Mon Cal and ended up right on his tail.

Pash and the other pilots on the bubble of being reduced to defender duty watch the Duro's precision with quiet admiration. Will begins to try to work the group for odds but none are taking.
The Mon Cal curses a string of profanities as he banks and twists. He shot goes wild as his already damaged engine continues to rupture and shuts down. His R2 unit works to fix the systems but at this point he is missing the ventral port ion engine. His ship is sluggish and off balanced in it's thrust, even with repulsorlifts compensating he will have a hard time pulling any but the most basic maneuver.
Over the coms you hear the Alpha squadron simulation room has gone silent except for the Mon Cal curses at his R2 unit.
Mechanics: Carne's gunnery was 2 failures and 2 threats. Keeg receives a boost die on his next piloting or gunnery. Carne also has 6 damage to his hull and 2 strain to his systems.

As he sees Carne's laser blasts go wide, Keeg gets more relaxed, and more into the zone. a Quick glance through the canopy through his trained pilot insticts he calculates the speeds of the two craft, as they are about to pass, and narrows down the limits of the opposing fighters moves. His speed advantage will helps and keeg pulls back hard on the Flight stick to get behind Carne, and finish him off.
Pilot check (i think i should get some kind of bonus for being faster, maybe one less purple? oh well) (2Y2G1B vs 2R2P) 2 success, which includes a Triumph, and 1 Threat. spending Triumph to upgrade my gunnery check, i assume Carne is going to give me a setback)
Slightly overshooting the turn Keeg lines himself right up behind Carne and is close enough to see the R2 Turn his Dome towards him, and presses the firing stuff slagging the rear of the X-wing in front of him with a couple of blasts.
Gunnery check (3Y1G vs 1P1S) 2 Success, and 3 Advantage, using advantage to activate linked ability, causing two hits of 8 damage each. using last Advantage to give the Mon cal a boost die on my next piloting.

The Mon Cals helmets goes flying across the Alpha Squad bay as his virtual x-wing goes up in a blaze of glory. After a moment to calm down he comes over,"Great flying Keeg. You may not be able to antenna of a Fefez at 2 klicks, but you can sure blast a Mon Cal at 200m to the unending seas. If we can find some booze on this berg the first is on me Keeg."
As Carne steps out of the holoimage a tall stately woman steps in. She looks like the recruitment poster for the republic or one of the girls in the holoimages carne plays over his bunk. She sits in the simulator and slides on her helmet. You wonder how anyone can make sliding on a helmet look that good. "Who is next?" She asks. The identifier on the sim comes up as Lt Fionia Dwyer.
Will Synar half pulls you from the simulator as Dasha watches with crossed arms. "Keeg you look tired. Take a rest and let me handle this one.'
